Poetically Speaking : Part I

My Favorite Lines by Ghalib

Chhod de ab use wafa ki ummeed Ghalib
Jo rula sakta hai who bhula bhi sakta hai

Let go the idea of expecting loyalty, Ghalib
One who can make you cry, can also forget you easily

---
-Peene de sharab masjid me baith ke Galib
Ya woh jaga bata jaha KHUDA nahi hai !!
Allow me to drink alcohol in a religious place

...if you can not then tell me the place where there is no God...
---
Hathon ki lakeeron pe mat ja aae ghalib
Kismat unki bhi hoti hai jinke hath nahi hote

Don’t go by the lines of your palm, oh Ghalib,
Those without hands have destinies too.

My Favorite Lines by Bahadur Shah Zafar

(thanks to Firoz, UK for sharing the same back in 2001)

उम्र-ए-दराज़ माँगके लाए थे चार दिन
दो आरज़ू में कट गए, दो इन्तज़ार में
I asked for a long life, I received four days
Two passed in desire, two in waiting.

बुलबुल को पासबाँ से न सैयाद से गिला
क़िस्मत में क़ैद लिखी थी फ़स्ल-ए-बहार में
The nightingale complains about neither the sentinel nor the hunter
Fate had decreed imprisonment during the harvest of spring
