Teresa Joseph (Puthur Jos)

I am blessed to have a sister
Who is three in one
A friend,  a sibling and a mentor
Second to none

Its not just me
Who will vouch for your heart
There are a hundred life journeys
Where you have played a special part

Your energy and resolve
Can bring light to a township
Your helping attitude
A true example of friendship

A head full of ideas
Perfect in execution
For every possible problem
You can create multiple solutions

But for me all that is secondary
Your love transcends the ordinary
You are like a second mom
Your home is like my second home

Thank you dear Kunechi
For being so  wonderful to me
If I have your blessing
Ups or Downs,  I will live free

Love Manoj

Puthur Jos Michael

An elder brother
I always looked upto
Calm and composed
Is the chettan I always knew

A zest for a rustic life
finding joy in simple things
an observant eye,
hundred ideas take wings

All his stories
I have heard over the years
Overflows with simplicity,
joy and never any tears

His collection of old pens
His Bajaj and his cycle
With treasure of old stories
Is our brother P J Michael

He writes and he reads
He follows and he leads
He is a taster and a cook
a librarian and a book

He will talk with nostalgia
With a cup of tea in his hand
Every conversation, I collect
A few more grains of sand

I wanted to grow up
And be like him
And though years have passed
I still idolise him

Love Manoj

First person I ever cried for
The day he passed away
My Grandfather was the best
Memories which linger and stay

Walking to the market
Barefoot just like him
Taking the cow to graze
Or to the stream to swim

Inspecting the fields
Learning to tie knots
He telling me about plants
And how things are bought

Evaluating tapiocas quality
Or freshness of fish
Different types of bananas
And tasting a perfect dish

Helping him in my little way
Was an excuse to be with him
Here was a man I aspired
To grow up just like him

I will ask him to tell
Of incidents long gone
Though I heard them many times
I would ask him to go on

Sitting on his chair,
Eating achh roti like him
Holding on to trinklets
Once used by him

Hug when we arrived
Tears when we did leave
Summer Holidays in Kerala
Taught me to give more than I recieve

He gifted me a hammer once
I held it with such pride
Some part of me is sculpted
I can feel him inside

Tears do well up when I think back
Of the love I did receive
How I wish I could hold his hand
And walk through green fields

A hardworking father and farmer
Who believed, God has a plan
All my sibling and cousins
Will vouch for this great man

Jesus, The Teacher

Written by Jibrael Jos

As a teacher myself I used to look at the teaching style of Jesus to draw inspiration. Most of the content below is based on my reading of books and resources and I don’t claim any scholarship in the matter. Content was prepared while teaching Catechism in Our Lady of Sacred Heart, Harlur Road.

This year I was teaching students of class 7. The course plan was planned around Gospel according to Mark. Jesus is portrayed as man of Action and Authority by St Mark but it made me wonder how effective was Jesus as a Teacher. Once the 16 chapters were over, I did a session on Jesus’s style of teaching. This article is based on the same.

Jesus used an indirect form of communication. He asked lot of questions. He used metaphors, analogies, aphorisms and similes. At times he used shocking examples so that audience gets the message and does not forget. Jesus was a story teller and knew how to get the attention of his audience. He used parables which were stories with a deeper meaning which the audience had to think about and digest it with time. He made people “think” for a change.

Examples Set 1
·         Parables (around 40 of them): Prodigal Son, Good Samaritan
·         Metaphors: Kingdom of God value is like a man who found a pearl
·         Similies:
"The Lord is my shepherd"
“The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”
"I am the bread of life."
“I am the way and the truth and the light.”
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.”
"You are the salt of the earth."
·         Questions
"Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
·         Shocking Extreme Example:
And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
So if your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away!
·         Figurative Labels: Peter Rock; Pharisees Brood of Vipers
·         Aphorisms
"Man shall not live on bread alone."
"No prophet is acceptable in his own country."
"Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be."
"If the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a pit."
"What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his life."
"Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you season it?"
·         Riddles:
“For those who have more will be given
And those who have nothing,
Even what they have will be taken away”
Mark 4:25

Teaching style included use of pauses which made people think. At times he talks in riddles but he does explain in detail too. A passionate teacher who taught with intensity. Whenever he got a chance he would teach. While walking, in a boat, during a meal, to large crowds, one to one. Jesus connected with audience with things they would see in daily life like fishing, farming, family etc. He compared God with a Father, Vineyard Owner, Shepherd etc
Example Set 2
·         Explaining in Detail: Explaining Parable of Sower
·         Teaching in Boat: Luke 5:3
·         Teaching while Walking: with two disciples on the way to Emmaus
·         Discussing One to One: with Nicodemus (John 3:1–21)

Jesus crafted memorable lines because he realized not many were taking notes in his class. So he must have prepared these verses so that they remain embedded in their minds. He used repetitions to make the point sink in.
Example Set 3
·         Memorable Lines:
“Ask, and you will receive;
seek, and you will find;
knock, and the door will be opened to you
Mathew 7:7

“Judge not, and you will not be judged;
condemn not, and you will not be condemned;
forgive, and you will be forgiven;
give, and it will be given to you.”
Luke 6:37-38.
·         Repetition : about his death and resurrection over and over again (Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:33–34),

Jesus led by example and definitely was a man who practice what he preached. He followed his preaching along with significant action. He never used PowerPoint presentation but he did use visual illustrations. He questioned people in authority on one side but still suggested that people pay taxes. He cleared all the business happening in the synagogue even at the cost of antagonizing the priest and religious. Jesus cared about the people around him and he dealt people with compassion and was not quick to judge but keen that people repent.
Example Set 4
·         Significant Action: Washing feet of disciples, Picking children up, riding a donkey
·         Visual Illustration: Widow dropping two coins, Washing feet of disciples
·         Compassion: Healing the sick
·         Not quick to judge: John 7:53

How was Jesus as a person, did he listen to his parents, did he lose his temper, did he get frustrated, did he cry, did he pray, did he listen, did he speak, create poetry and short stories, did he sing hymns …. well yes. But there is a lot we don’t know for instance did he dance, I wonder. Once I asked in class why did Jesus have to pray if he was God! I got a flurry of answers and one child in class answered that he is talking to his Father in heaven (what a simple yet wonderful answer).

Example Set 5
·         Righteous Anger: In the temple, Mark 11:15-19
·         Crying: Garden of Gethsemene, When Lazarus died
·         Listening to parents: Wedding at Cana
·         Praying: 19 occurrences in Gospel [5]: Garden of Gethsemene, On the cross, Before Raising Lazarus
·         Listening: Mark 5:34
·         Singing: After Last Supper, Mark 14:26

Orientation Workshops 2018

In the last two years I have conducted more than twenty orientation workshops. The basic idea is that a new class when it starts in college is not a team yet, students do not know each other and some times to create magic the class takes more than a year. Some classes just don't seem to click together leading to group-ism and division among the students

An orientation should ideally

  • break the ice
  • instill a sense of self belief
  • appreciate the diversity of the group
  • team building
  • leadership should emerge

Classes don't function in isolation, they are part of a department with a certain philosophy, part of larger institution with a certain set of values, mission and vision. How do students align to the same.

Truth is, as much as the management may want this to happen, unless the students are motivated and see a direct advantage and purpose in this it just cannot happen. Do the students themselves know where they are headed, what are their core values, goals and aspiration.

Some core sessions in these workshops are
  • Sociometry
  • Ice Breakers
  • Self Introspection
  • Games which make them uncomfortable
  • Games which make them comfortable
  • Games which divide them
  • Games which unite them
  • Team Work
  • Leadership
  • Mission, Vision and Values
  • Goal Setting
If you think you are alone, you are!
If you think you are scared, you are!
If you think you are sad, you are!

But the moment
you decide you are not,
You are not!

Students should be treated with utmost respect, their dreams and aspiration should not be scorned upon and trampled on. Each child is gem only if we are ready to give them a ear. Each child is like a seed, a catterpillar ready to sprout and ready to fly. I am happy I have been instrumental in enabling some of them to start their academic journey in their college with a gusto and passion they had long forgotten in their childhood.

Stand up O reluctant warrior,
You have a fight on hand.
Don't let mind play the barrier,
Utilise every grain of sand.
.......
There is an Arjun inside you
Don't you now clearly see!
Is he the reluctant one? Or
the warrior you were meant to be

I use a mix of expressive art like Theatre, Music, Dance and Poetry in this creative journey. Batch Size is usually around 50 students and have a two day and a one day variation of the same workshop. Most sessions have activity lead by the trainer and some which are planned and lead by the students themselves.

Conducted for History, Economics, Engineering, Law, Computer Science,MBA, MCA, Psychology, Business Administration, Performing Arts, Theater Studies, Music, Maths, Electronics, Travel & Tourism and Pre University.

Credit for these workshop goes to college/university management who are willing to invite me for such paid orientation right at the beginning of the academic year. Some Directors and Deans trusted me to impart the Vision and Mission of their esteemed institutions. Many HOD and teachers took a very active interest in customizing the workshop for the specific challenges faced in the departments. The list of names is long and I will not mention it here but each catalyst, mentor, professor I have encountered knows and takes pride when their students take a leap of faith, a sincere initiative to make a difference in the world around them.

I believe I can make a difference
I believe I can touch the lives of some
I believe strongly that so can you.

I am really lucky to have this course and really lucky to have an opportunity to have an orientation with you and you are really a great teacher." Aditi Kulkarni

Myself Sneha pursuing my degree at Christ University. Yesterday you had come to take some interesting sessions for us, I was seriously amazed by the little things you taught us. We as humans always tries to complain or feel feel stingy about things. But the way you made us realise, life is all about hand to hand it's all about give and take. The one best thing which inspired me is never complain about things but make use of the little things you've and how a team have to be more productive in nature. I'm glad I attended and met a person like you. My best wishes are with you sir. I'll keep you in my prayers. May your life inspire others too."   Sneha.S

"Sir this is Ashwathy from Christ 1st PEP ..... Yesterday's experience was something mind blowing .... We got to be whole as a class and got to know everyone better.... Personally I feel that it's very hard to make one happy.... And you've accomplished a huge task by making all of us happy ....  thank you very much sir... Each of us are looking forward to do more of these kind of workshops within these 3 yrs at Christ"

A Trip to Delhi

(Article on recent Delhi Trip)
A trip to Delhi is full of nostalgia.
Dripping like the woolen sweater taken out of a bucketful of water.
My school to college days
My childhood to teen
Adventures in my youth
The games we played
The streets we stayed

The land of gold gappas
Aloo Tikki,  Bhalle Papadi,
Shahi Paneer, Chole Bhature
Rasmalai, Rabadi Faluda
And much much more

Most importantly it's my home.
My mom, dad, Bro and Sisters reside in different parts of Delhi.
Summer scorching heat, dust storms or rising pollution
could not deter me in this life

Fond memories just keep popping out like the condensation which collects around a chilled coke.

I am forty plus
But still feel like a child
When I come home
Mom would have a sumptuous meal ready and not a word about me being overweight :-)
Papa with his warm handshake
And his immense inner strength
Makes home home.

Sisters so amazing
you can give your life for
Bro in laws so welcoming
Every home is mine!
Shared moments,  recipes,  happiness secrets,  inspirational nuggets.
Conversation over tea,  coffee,  meal,  card game, metro ride or a drive is etched for eternity in the mind's treasure chest
What more can one ask?

Visiting Elder Bro
and listening to his stories
revitalises my leaves,  my roots
and seems to connects me to mother earth. This time I also visited a quaint tea shop with him and grabbed some gourmet tea leaf cartons.

Cracking jokes with nephews and nieces leaves me in splits. Infact this trip I have laughed so much,  that to an external observer,  I must have come across as clearly insane.

Catching up with old friends
is a trip down memory lane
Divergent paths have led us all over the globe but everytime we meet we are able to start from where we left last time.

Delhi is immersed in history
Every walk you take may have been done by some emperor, a princess,  a commander or a freedom fighter.
But frankly all that is secondary,  like millions before me who have walked these dusty streets and millions with me, Dilli hamari hai aur hum dilli ke

Kochi: Adrift in Timelessness

I stood on the banks of this shore
Yearning to reach the other shore
A ferry tempted me to step inside
But a quaint tea stall drew me aside
By the time I finished my tea
Church bells called out to me
Laughter and children's stare
Distracted me from my prayer
I hurried thru the street
In the humid Kerala heat
Making most of my vacation
Clicking pics of my excursions
I stood again on the river shore
Amazed as the light reflected on her floor
I inquired her where does she go?
"Me! It's you who wants to rush for more"

Stunned I sat down beside her
My mind took a dip inside her
Then and only then did I see
River going but yet not going to the sea
Now I saw a dog idling in shade
Ducks gliding thru the glade
Kingfisher sitting on the tree
Sea birds flying free
Now I amble thru the street
In this different Kerala heat!!
Making most of my excursion
By doing NOTHING this vacation
